Kogarah Town Square
Kogarah Town Square, Sydney, Australia
Kogarah Town Square sets a new benchmark in best practice urban and environmental design. Launching the 2004 Year of the Built Environment at Kogarah, NSW Premier Bob Carr praised the ‘European-style’ town square development for bringing together public and retail spaces, apartment living and leading-edge ecologically sustainable design (ESD).
The Town Square is striking for its combination of energy and water efficient design principles which have created one of the most sustainable urban communities in NSW. With the equivalent of a solar power station on the roof, and a water detention tank the size of an Olympic swimming pool, the Square is calculated to generate enough solar energy to power 32 suburban homes and save 42 per cent of potable water use compared to a typical residential development.
Kogarah Town Square provides a focal point for the Sydney suburb of Kogarah, linking into the adjacent ‘main street’ shopping precinct of Railway Parade. The development comprises 33 retail outlets, 193 privately owned apartments of one- two- or three-bedrooms, a 224-space basement public carpark, an expansive public foyer/library space, plus the Town Square itself.
