Our Lady of Fatima is a new Catholic Church in the Sydney suburb of Caringbah. While modern in form, the Church reflects current Catholic doctrine, evoking ‘memories’ of traditional church forms via the timber roof structure, circular windows and the rich colours of the ambulatory. The main space focuses on the altar, seating 600 people; a day chapel, which is freer in form, seats 50; and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacraments which provides a simple space for private devotion, seats 8. The Church is naturally ventilated, with fresh air supplied at floor level, and exhausted through a continuous roof ventilator. Motorised adjustable louvres in the external walls control the amount of air supplied to the underfloor space. In winter, the roof ventilator is closed and the majority of the warmed air is reused; an automatic control system ensures that draughts are controlled in strong wind conditions. AJ+C designed the church to bring people closer together, enriching the sense of community while maintaining an aura of mystery and reverence.
